Fifth Grade Honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

01/16/26

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., our Fifth Grade students took their learning to the next level by creating a thoughtful and engaging presentation for the Seven Arrows community. Their work focused on key symbols of the Civil Rights Movement and the powerful ideas they represent.

Among the symbols highlighted were the handshake and the broken chain. Fifth graders shared that during the Civil Rights Movement, the handshake symbolized trust and agreement between people of different races—values that remain deeply important today. The broken chain was explored as a symbol of the end of slavery and discrimination, as well as hope for the future. Students also connected this symbol to the work of artist Melvin Edwards, whose sculptures honor Dr. King’s legacy. As one student explained, Dr. King believed that everyone—regardless of skin color or gender—deserves to be treated equally.

Through their presentation, Fifth Grade helped lead our community into the holiday with a deeper appreciation for Dr. King’s work and the enduring relevance of his words, ideas, and symbols today.
