TREEAMS is a collaboration between Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace, Seven Arrows Elementary, Little Dolphins By The Sea Preschool, SoLa Foundation, and UCLA School of Education.

The Los Angeles Fires
On January 7, 2025, unprecedented wildfires swept through Los Angeles, devastating both the Pacific Palisades and Altadena communities, destroying more than 16,000 structures and severely damaging more than a dozen schools. Overnight, families lost their homes and dispersed to find temporary housing. Schools turned to online education and sought new locations – sometimes in distant areas of the city. After years of disruption from COVID, we suddenly faced renewed isolation, uncertainty and in some cases despair.
Jane Goodall’s Philosophy
Having written The Book of Hope, Jane Goodall has consistently taught us the importance of hope — hope that takes action and works with determination to move toward the small speck of light at the end of a tunnel. This is the hope we need as we face the daunting challenge of rebuilding ourbeloved communities, both in Pacific Palisades and Altadena.
At a time when depression, anxiety, and loneliness are at record highs among young people, it is essential that we model optimism, connection and resilience. By providing young people with the opportunity to come together and take positive action, we teach them to not only heal from the fires, but also prepare to face future challenges with hope and resilience.
TREEAMS Program
In response, TREEAMS —Together Revitalizing Environments and Elevating Awareness by Mobilizing Society—was born as a student-led movement of healing, hope and action. TREEAMS empowers students to come together across the city to plant trees, restore optimism, and reimagine Los Angeles as a greener, more resilient city for generations to come.
TREEAMS is empowering students to lead the ecological and emotional renewal of their communities. Through environmental education, tree mapping, and large-scale tree planting, the project seeks to transform grief into action by restoring burned landscapes, replanting lost trees, and cultivating resilience. Students will learn from local experts what types of trees to plant, how to plant, and how to maintain the newly planted trees.
TREEAMS will build unity across Los Angeles, providing a roadmap for students to work together to rebuild their communities. We are creating a network of school partnerships that cross geographic boundaries and build unity between public and private schools. All generations, from young siblings to grandparents, will be encouraged to attend tree planting events. The planting of each tree will be a symbolic act of healing and unity.
To carry out the work, student leaders will be equipped with tools to drive environmental change, including learning Jane Goodall’s Tree Planting and Restoration System to document a neighborhood’s current conditions and provide a long-term framework to monitor growth and sustainability.
Ultimately, the project’s objective is to create a greener Los Angeles where students and their communities not only heal from loss, but also shape a sustainable, hopeful future for generations to come.

The students who gathered today for the inauguration of the Aldersgate Nursery project, had special empathy for the families being evacuated from Simi Valley right now. These students, affected by the Altadena and Pacific Palisades fires, have an intimate understanding of the potential devastation of severe weather in their communities. They understand the importance of planting the right trees in the right places to help deter fires from spreading. .
By taking action, students are bringing hope, and leading the way with best practices. They replanted small trees in 15 gallon buckets, making the Aldersgate historical building of Seven Arrows Elementary, a nursery for these native trees, which will be tended to by TREEAMS volunteers and kept until other schools, parks and community members are ready to receive them.

Our event on Saturday was amazing! We had such a good volunteer turnout, which is really the most amazing thing. Thank you to CA State Parks for inviting us to partner with them to restore Will Roger’s Park. To Noah Rishe, Senior Environmental Scientist, for educating us on the restoration process to our students and believing in us to do this important work.

Yesterday morning, over at Will Rogers State Historic Park, we gathered in celebration of Earth Day, and as part of TREEAMS’s commitment to mobilize the reforestation of this beloved state park.
We started where the land needed us most. California State Parks had already identified spots where invasive species were crowding out the natives, so before a single tree went in the ground, students and volunteers got to work clearing the way. Preparing the soil. Removing Invasive Plants. Resilient Palisades’ David Card, our mentor, guided the planting of one oak tree and two elderberry plants as a meaningful beginning to our work in the park.

We’re so pleased pronounce that in direct collaboration with California State Park, and with our partners @janegoodallinst and @uclaseis, we have been granted the specia opportunity to reforest Will Roger’s State Park, which was severely affected by the Palisades Fire.
This weekend we will focus on removing invasive species in preparation for re-planting and re-foresting a beautiful corner of the Park, up above the current horse paddocks.
Will Rogers State Park is beloved, not just to local Palisadians and Malibu residents, but also Los Angeles at large. This event is the first of many within our mission and vision for replanting Los Angeles post fires.
We’ll see you this weekend where you can participate, learn more about an exciting announcement and contest launch as part of our forthcoming initiatives, as well as be one with nature in a space so near and dear to all of our hearts, here in the special city.
