Global Arts and Languages

Spanish

Studies have shown that immersion in a foreign language before the age of nine enhances not only students’ linguistic abilities but their cognitive abilities as well. The Spanish language program at Seven Arrows goes far beyond the goals of language acquisition: It adds to the school’s overall vision of developing students who view themselves as global citizens. The school is deeply committed to integrating Spanish language and Latin American and Spanish cultural awareness into its core curricular offerings.

Spanish is taught at all grade levels several times weekly. The program is designed to provide a solid foundation in basic Spanish speaking and listening skills, to nurture a love of learning, and to instill and inspire respect for and curiosity about Spanish-speaking cultures. Students develop a solid foundation, acquire ample vocabulary, and begin to understand and communicate using a multitude of modalities, from music and theater to personal experiences, poems, and Spanish-language literature. Spanish is taught 3 times per week.

Seven Arrows believes strongly in a literature-based approach to teaching language. Through literature, students engage in activities such as illustrating story scenes, learning vocabulary as a story progresses, and practicing written and auditory comprehension skills. Spanish at Seven Arrows is known for its innovation and fundamental ties to the most current research in second-language acquisition. The program’s greatest strength lies in its focus on creating authentic, relevant cultural experiences that not only teach students Spanish-language fundamentals but also inspire them to appreciate the culture, further contextualizing the use of the language.

Spanish is seamlessly integrated into art, music, drama, language arts, Edible Garden, technology, and more. Our Spanish program also comes to life in two special global festivals: El Día de los Muertos, in the fall, and our Mother’s Day festivities, El Día de Madre, each spring.

The Arts

Arts education is valuable in its own right, but research continues to show how art improves critical thinking and problem-solving skills, creativity, and even academic performance. For this reason, Seven Arrows proudly makes art in all its forms an integral part of the curriculum at all grade levels. We recognize each student as a unique artist and encourage the expression, exploration, and celebration of fine art.

The school offers a wide variety of artistic experiences, giving students an opportunity to explore various media and to find their own unique voices and strengths within each artistic endeavor. Our Global Festivals teach students how art is depicted around the world by artists and in genres that are unique to each culture.

Throughout the arts program, students pursue excellence as they explore and grow to understand their individual forms of expression.

Dance

Learning the art of dance helps children develop knowledge, skill, and an understanding of the world through the concrete reality of movement.

In addition, dance helps children flourish in literacy through the translation of movement expression and communication into words. Language and dance are incorporated in a fabric of communication and understanding.

Dance is essential to the Seven Arrows mission to teach and promote passion for learning, academic excellence, and a commitment to local and global communities. At our annual Dia de los Muertos performance, dance provides students with multiple perspectives and a foundation for the development of more-advanced skills that will lead to a fulfilling life.

Maya Angelou once said, “Everything in the universe has rhythm. Everything dances.”

Drama

We know that many children are kinesthetic learners who benefit from movement and a physical approach to education. Through dance and drama, students acquire new skills, become more self-confident with every public performance, and reinforce much of what they’ve learned in the classroom. Dramatic performances are often based on literature being studied concurrently in the classroom. Fiction is chosen from the required reading curriculum and transformed into a script, which students then perform. The arts and academic curricula work in conjunction to increase their impact and efficacy. This is the essence of a holistic education.

Drama is also integrated into music lessons, language arts, and the Global Cultural History program.

Music

The music program at Seven Arrows is an essential and integral part of our curriculum. Music is part of virtually all community events and ceremonies, including the weekly all-school Kuyam assemblies, global festivals, graduation, and even athletic events.

Our music program includes a variety of instructional methods:

  • The Fundamentals of Music and Theory

  • Music Appreciation and History

  • Vocal/Choir Training

  • Recorder, Keyboard, and Dulcimer

  • Orff Instrumentarium

  • Drum Circle

  • Music and Movement

  • Sixth-Grade Band

Seven Arrows embraces the notion that musical intelligence has a positive impact on many other intelligences. Our program challenges students to develop a fundamental understanding and appreciation of music through hands-on instruction rooted in musical concepts and performance opportunities. Our goal is to inspire students to become listeners, performers, appreciators, and creators of music. Through theory-based games, rehearsals, and performances, they learn teamwork, goal setting, public speaking, responsibility, and how to use their own creativity.

Starting in kindergarten, students sing and play instruments, become aware of the basic expressive elements of music, and learn to discern variations in rhythm, tempo, and dynamics. They begin their creative work in music as they learn and perform musical pieces.

The program covers a wide range of repertoire and genres, from classical to popular music, highlighting the cultural and historical significance of music and the role it plays in societies around the globe.

Students in kindergarten through fifth grade enjoy two music classes a week, and sixth-graders have one 90-minute class a week, in addition to special rehearsals and actual performance time at Kuyams and festivals.

SIXTH-GRADE BAND

Our sixth-graders form a band that provides choice, creativity, and autonomy within a clearly defined structure. Students in all grades look forward to this special opportunity in their last year at Seven Arrows, when they will learn invaluable lessons in teamwork, discipline, and patience as they unite to create a polished ensemble sound. The sixth-graders divide all responsibilities normally associated with a band, and they learn about band management, song writing, marketing, and promotion. The band performs several times during the year, including at Kuyams and at their graduation. Sixth-graders may choose to compose an original piece of music or to write new lyrics for an existing song.
