Oceanography Reimagined: A Signature Program Reborn

09/22/25

For many years, Oceanography has been a beloved tradition at Seven Arrows, but in the wake of the January fires, our sixth-grade Oceanography Program has been reimagined and elevated to a new level. What was once a memorable weekly class trip to Will Rogers Beach has now become a transformative signature experience, blending science, adventure, environmental stewardship, and social-emotional growth in ways that reflect our school’s resilience and vision for the future.

Science and Stewardship

Students dive into marine science with hands-on investigations: studying invasive species, sketching organisms with scientific precision, creating bioplastics, and assembling their own take-home microscopes. They snorkel through kelp forests, kayak into sea caves, and explore tidepools teeming with life. “Students were wowed by what they saw and were sad when it was time to start swimming to shore,” noted teacher Brian Lucett. Lessons in environmental responsibility are woven throughout, from studying plastic pollution to leading beach cleanups.

Adventure and Teamwork

Surf Happens instructors guide students through the surf at beginner-friendly beaches, teaching them not just how to ride waves but also how to read the ocean with confidence and respect. On land, improv games, Spanish activities, and team-building challenges encourage collaboration and connection. At night, students gather around the campfire to reflect, share gratitudes, and strengthen friendships. “The number of students who shared that they had created new friendships and connections… to me, this is the measure of success,” said Lucett.

Connected to a Bigger Vision

The reimagined Oceanography Program is not just a trip, it is part of a broader evolution of environmental learning at Seven Arrows. Alongside initiatives like TREEAMS, our student-led movement to reimagine a greener, more resilient Los Angeles, Oceanography represents how we are turning adversity into innovation. Both programs grew out of our school community’s response to the fires, and both embody our commitment to nurturing changemakers who will lead with knowledge, empathy, and courage.

A Program That Reflects Our Spirit

Oceanography has always been a highlight of sixth grade, but today, it is also a symbol of how Seven Arrows has emerged stronger, more creative, and more connected in the face of change. Students return not only with knowledge of the sea, but with confidence, independence, and a sense of belonging to something larger than themselves.
