Winter Edible Garden: Recipes Included
02/06/26
Edible Garden illustrates our commitment to Integrated Experiential Learning at Seven Arrows. Combining STEAM learning with hands-on work in the garden, moving through the life skills of food preparation and cooking, to the ultimate experience of mindful eating, Edible Garden is a true example of transcending the classroom.

During our February Winter Edible Garden, Seven Arrows students focused on the main parts of the plant and its function as they planted and harvested in our garden beds. Each part of the plant serves a different purpose, which was reviewed before our gardeners categorized different edible plant parts. Students were able to see that we eat different parts of plants, some are roots (carrots, beets) and some are stems (celery, asparagus). We also eat leaves (lettuce, spinach, kale), flowers (broccoli, cauliflower) and seeds (beans, seeds).
Students also had a chance to revitalize our Edible Garden by harvesting and planting new plants, noticing what plant parts we will eat from each type of plant in the future. Our scientists also practiced scientific sketching, a mode of learning that engages the brain to see the whole, but also zoom in with the help of magnifying glasses to record details, observations and questions, as we enjoyed the peace and nature inspired space of our garden.
