Joshua Tree: An Expedition of Challenge, Discovery, and Growth

Our Fifth Grade students recently embarked on an unforgettable Environmental Outdoor Education (EOE) adventure in Joshua Tree National Park.

Our Fifth Grade students recently returned from an unforgettable Environmental Outdoor Education (EOE) trip to Joshua Tree National Park an experience that brought together STEAM learning, social-emotional growth, and real-world adventure in true Seven Arrows fashion.

Day 1: Arrival, Exploration, and First Discoveries
The journey began early as students set off for the desert, filled with anticipation for the week ahead. After arriving at Sheep Pass and learning essential safety skills, students set up their tents, which was no small feat in gusty desert winds, and immediately immersed themselves in the landscape with a scramble up Mount Ryan. Along the way, they studied desert ecology, learning about the remarkable adaptations of plants like cholla and Joshua trees.

The day concluded with journaling and meditation, an intentional pause to reflect and connect with the environment, followed by community games, dinner, and an evening circle where students shared insights and learned about night vision and nocturnal desert life.

Day 2: Climbing, Hiking, and Expanding Perspectives
Students rose early and headed to Barker Dam for a day of hands-on exploration. Dividing into groups, they rotated between rock climbing and hiking. On the rock faces, students learned belay systems, safety techniques, and pushed themselves to climb routes that challenged both body and mind. Just as important, they supported one another—offering encouragement, patience, and teamwork throughout.

The hike provided another layer of scientific inquiry, as students observed desert flora and fauna and visited a site once inhabited by Native Americans. Sitting among ancient pictographs, they reflected on the deep history of the land and their place within it.

That evening, the learning continued under the stars as students explored astronomy, learned about constellations, planets, and the vastness of the Milky Way.

Day 3: Mastery, Reflection, and Looking Ahead
On their final full day, students traveled to the renowned “Towers of Uncertainty” for an extended rock climbing experience. With increased confidence and skill, they took on more advanced routes, with some even attempting climbs blindfolded—an incredible demonstration of trust, focus, and resilience.

Back at camp, students took time to journal and reflect on their growth before gathering for a closing circle atop a granite outcrop overlooking the campsite. Together, they shared the challenges they overcame, the lessons they learned, and the ways they had grown over the course of the week.

Throughout the trip, students were fully immersed in STEAM learning, from studying ecosystems and geology to exploring astronomy in one of the clearest night skies in the country. Equally powerful was the development of social-emotional skills such as resilience, empathy, collaboration, and self-reflection—all core pillars of the Seven Arrows philosophy.

By the end of the week, students returned not only with new knowledge and skills, but with a deeper sense of confidence, connection, and appreciation for the natural world. This Joshua Tree expedition is a powerful example of what happens when learning extends beyond the classroom, transforming into an experience that shapes both mind and character.
